Model Choice in Production—Optimization?

MS/OR models have a chequered history, and the literature and applications only partially overlap. Reasons for this may be the lack of preparation for choosing a model and an inability to manage organizational change, rather than the model development. In the production scheduling case presented here, four separate divisions within one company make similar products, but the models they developed were radically different. The major influences were their differing payment systems.
