Doing Good with Good O.R.

Eoin O’Mahony of Cornell University won the 2014 Doing Good with Good O.R. Student Paper Competition for the paper “Smarter Tools for (Citi)Bike Sharing.”

The competition is held each year to identify and honor outstanding projects in the field of operations research and the management sciences conducted by a student or student group that have a significant societal impact. Finalists presented their papers in sessions held Nov. 9 in conjunction with the INFORMS Annual Meeting in San Francisco.

The prize committee was co-chaired by Carri Chan and Ruben Proano, who made the presentation.

The committee honored two second-place finishers:

• AndrewFoxandTessaSwanson of Northwestern University for their paper, “Volunteer Engagement in the Age of Analytics: A Case Study with American Red Cross, Greater Chicago Region”; and
• FeyzaGulizSahinyazanof McGill University for the paper, “Optimizing Mobile Blood Collection: Application in Turkey.”

Other finalists included Hsin-Chan Huang and Bismark Singh of the University of Texas at Austin (“Optimizing Vaccine Allocation for Pandemic Influenza”) and Yuvraj Sing of Georgia Tech (“Global Supply Chain Optimization”).
