“Status Climbing vs. Bridging: Multinational Stakeholder Engagement Strategies,” a research paper published in a recent issue of the INFORMS journal Strategy Science, was named the 2018 winner of the Ralph Gomory Best Industry Award by the Industry Studies Association (ISA). The paper authors include Lite J. Nartey (Darla Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina), Witold J. Henisz (The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania) and Sinziana Dorobantu (Leonard N. Stern School of Business, New York University).
“An Examination of Early Transfers to the ICU Based on a Physiologic Risk Score,” a paper published in Manufacturing & Service Operations Management (M&SOM), another INFORMS journal, was one of two runners-up for the award. Wenqi Hu, Carri W. Chan, José R. Zubizarreta (Columbia Business School, Columbia University) and Gabriel J. Escobar (Kaiser Permanente Division of Research) authored the M&SOM paper.
The Gomory Award, which recognizes excellence in industry studies research, encourages researchers to build relationships with practitioners to gain access to primary data, bring the contextual knowledge gathered in the field to bear on the formation of research questions and research design, and use that knowledge to guide data analysis, interpretations, and conclusions.
The article authors have been invited to write a brief reflection on the backstory of their paper – where the idea came from, how they engaged the industry context, and how that context affected their thinking and writing process – for publication in a future edition of each journal.
