The INFORMS community has been anticipating the publication of the inaugural issue of INFORMS Journal on Data Science (IJDS). This moment is an important milestone on a journey that began several years ago when our data science research community raised the need for a new top journal. The publication of the first issue is our formal introduction to this community and beyond, showcasing IJDS as a great outlet for publishing high-impact data science methodology.
Data science research is fast moving with a large proportion of work published in non-peer-reviewed preprints (e.g., arXiv and SSRN). INFORMS values and understands the importance of speed, openness and wide access when it comes to academic publishing. Ambitiously, IJDS aims to provide rigorously peer-reviewed research with a high level of access, openness and speed. Providing public access to the inaugural issue is part of that effort. Here are important steps we’ve taken: All articles in this first issue are freely accessible on the IJDS website. In general, all accepted papers are posted as early as possible on the website, and in the near future, accepted papers in INFORMS journals will be posted online shortly after acceptance. To receive notification of new IJDS papers, simply sign up for e-alerts at https://pubsonline.informs.org/journal/ijds. Authors are also welcome to post their submitted version on preprint servers (before submission, during review or after acceptance).
The inaugural issue contains a “Frontiers Article” with three commentaries, several research articles and one review article. The issue highlights the power of ensembles: how a wealth of data science topics from a diverse set of authors with different backgrounds and expertise creates a set of highly relevant and important methodological advances and discussions. Importantly, all articles have the unique IJDS theme of decisions + data + methods + implications. For a brief tour of the articles in the inaugural issue, you can read the editorial – this will likely whet your appetite, and so you might find yourself reading the articles themselves, which are all easily and freely accessible online.
Note the special attention and efforts devoted toward assuring published work is reproducible. Reproducible research is not only better for science, but it is also more impactful. Therefore, each IJDS research article is accompanied by a “code capsule,” allowing readers to reproduce the results and use the code for their own research and applications. The code capsule has passed a reproducibility check by the IJDS Reproducibility Team and was available to reviewers during the peer review process.
IJDS will continue with the spirit of innovation, openness, communication and visibility. We will continue prioritizing a scientifically rigorous, timely and constructive review process that supports the data science community and field. Send us your next relevant, top-tier article and join the IJDS journey!
