People interested in learning more about how to navigate the field of mathematical optimization can benefit greatly from working collaboratively. To better achieve such collaboration, Cristina Radu founded Optimization4All (O4A) in 2024 as an educational project that brings together students, professionals, and organizations in the O.R. field.
With its mission to increase awareness about the benefits of mathematical optimization to society, the O4A team created a space in which optimization is open, accessible, and inclusive. Optimization4All is built on four pillars: community, creativity, curiosity, and knowledge. We believe that:
- Community matters, as growth doesn’t happen in a vacuum.
- Creativity requires consistency, work, and stumbling. Forget perfection; just start showing up.
- Curiosity is necessary to step out of our comfort zones and make real change in the world.
- Knowledge isn’t power unless it’s shared. We’re about truth, honest discussions, and keeping our minds wide open.
With our website, monthly events, and an active YouTube following, our project has already gained a strong foothold in the larger O.R. community.
Our Journey
When Cristina began freelancing in optimization, she offered (via LinkedIn) live, free classes on how to build supply chain optimization-solvers. In just five days, more than 1,200 people signed up to attend. Encouraged by her success, Cristina started giving live, online optimization lessons to approximately 300 participants. She posted on YouTube her recordings of those lessons and gained more than 500 views in the first 24 hours. Cristina then packaged her lessons as a 10-episode YouTube masterclass.
Consequently, many people from all walks of O.R. life – including students, academics, professionals, and business owners – reached out to Cristina and shared their professional stories and challenges. The O4A community began to come together.
One year later, that community launched the Optimization4All website, and the response has been very enthusiastic. The O4A team has now started organizing live online events that offer hands-on education and provide professional guidance and networking.
The most popular and well-attended have been O4A live events guest-hosted by industry leaders, which have attracted hundreds of participants. We also offer a monthly Community Connect event by and for our community members. At these events, both experienced and new members from industry and academia take the stage to share their expertise in real-life industry projects, niche applications, and academic projects. These events are interactive, and our discussions often extend beyond the designated one-hour meetups.
The latest addition to our events is the “Hands-on Modeling Series.” Senior O.R. professionals from the O4A community guide their audiences through practical development projects in their areas of expertise. The spring 2026 sessions focused on performance and scalability and attracted more than 250 live participants and more than 1,400 views of the recordings.
In addition to these events, we have built a large knowledge base in which we have gathered hand-picked optimization resources. Here, community members share the optimization content they collect, create, and curate. We have also experimented with other initiatives, including our mentorship program and networking events, which we would love to continue and need more volunteers for.
We are all volunteers, experimenting and using our passion to drive this initiative forward. We take learning seriously, and we know that building a community requires an open mind. A year into our project, we have hit walls, overcome obstacles, and continue building and growing.
Our Goals
Besides being an educational initiative, we are also a networking hub. As such, we intend to not only strengthen our community, but also demonstrate on a global stage the power of optimization. The O4A community has members all around the world, with people from 80 countries. Optimization has the potential to better us all, and we are its ambassadors, sharing our stories and our professional expertise with the world.
We recently registered as a non-profit foundation in the Netherlands. If you’d like to join us or donate to our cause, please contact us at [email protected].
Cristina Radu, PhD, is a strategic advisor for supply chain planning and optimization software, driven by the mission to bridge the gap between the logic of systems and human intuition. To share her expertise at scale, she created a 10-episode masterclass on supply chain optimization, guiding professionals through the concepts and tools that drive smarter, more efficient supply chains. She is the founder of Optimization4All, a learning community aimed at making mathematical optimization accessible to everyone. Leon Inglese is a founding board member of Optimization4All and a co-organizer of the monthly Community Connect events. He worked as a researcher in optimization at the University of Lisbon before his current position as an Ethical AI researcher at the optimization company Dots & Lines.
