The power of analytics to drive real-world impact takes center stage in the work of Professor Dick den Hertog. From the classroom to the analytics field, his approach roots itself in practical application – taking theory and transforming it into solutions that address today’s most critical challenges.
Den Hertog gave a keynote at the 2025 INFORMS Analytics+ Conference called, “Analytics for a Better World,” in which he went beyond theory to demonstrate what’s possible when data meets purpose. He wasn’t just talking about concepts – he shared success stories in which advanced optimization models have been used to improve food distribution, clean the oceans and expand healthcare access in underserved regions. More importantly, he invited the INFORMS community to join him in tackling challenges that matter.
The Analytics for a Better World Institute, led by den Hertog, focuses on practical, scalable solutions that align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). His keynote showcased successful, real-world applications of analytics and offered insight into ongoing research opportunities for the INFORMS community.
Real-world Success Stories
World Food Programme (WFP): Partnering with organizations like Palantir Technologies, UPS, Tilburg University and Georgia Tech, den Hertog said the WFP team created optimization models that improved food aid delivery to millions across 88 countries. He discussed how analytics-driven efficiencies are essential during emergencies. This feat earned WFP the 2021 INFORMS Franz Edelman Award.
Ocean Cleanup: Analytics guides vessels to efficiently remove plastic from the world’s oceans. By applying advanced routing models, The Ocean Cleanup maximizes efficiency in tackling marine pollution – a pressing environmental challenge.
Healthcare Access: Through collaborations with organizations such as the World Bank, World Health Organization (WHO), Amref and the American Red Cross, den Hertog shared projects that optimize healthcare delivery in underserved regions. These initiatives include mapping healthcare facilities in Timor-Leste, placing stroke centers in Vietnam, deploying COVID-19 testing in Nepal, and finding optimal water well sites in Sudan.
Call to Action for the INFORMS Community
Den Hertog’s keynote highlighted unresolved challenges and invited conference attendees and INFORMS members to contribute their expertise. His message was clear:
For researchers, he encouraged people to join Analytics for a Better World to prioritize impactful projects over publication counts. He also said prioritizing collaboration with nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) can expand the reach and relevance of their work.
For companies, den Hertog offered the proposition of providing financial or in-kind sponsorship and mentorship to accelerate innovative solutions.
Speaking to INFORMS the organization, den Hertog suggested offering mentorship and membership programs for NGO employees and professionals in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). He also mentioned the impact of building a supportive community of analytics professionals and how that amplifies impact across diverse initiatives.
Looking Ahead
Den Hertog’s presentation inspired the INFORMS community to leverage analytics for tangible, positive outcomes worldwide. His approach underscores a shift from theory to application, offering practical ways to address some of the world’s most pressing issues. Attendees left this keynote equipped with actionable ideas for making a difference with analytics.
