Caterpillar and the Analytics Society of INFORMS recently announced the finalists for the 2019 Innovative Applications in Analytics Award (IAAA) competition. The award recognizes organizations for applications that feature novel combinations of descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics to achieve meaningful results. According to Professor Juan Jaramillo, the award chair, the quality of submissions in this year’s competition was very high, making the judging panel’s selection process quite challenging.

The applications selected as IAAA finalists, in no particular order, are as follows:

  • “A Machine Learning Approach to Shipping Box Design,” jet.com/Walmart Labs
  • “InnoGPS: Innovation Global Positioning System,” Singapore University of Technology and Design
  • “Machine Learning: Multi-site Evidence-based Best Practice Discovery,” Center for Operations Research in Medicine and Healthcare
  • “Taking Assortment Optimization from Theory to Practice: Evidence from Large Field Experiments on Alibaba,” Washington University in St. Louis
  • “Transparent Machine Learning Models for Predicting Seizures in ICU Patients from cEEG Signals,” Duke University, Harvard University, University of Wisconsin and Massachusetts General Hospital
  • “Using Advanced Analytics to Rationalize Tail Spend Suppliers at Verizon,” Verizon

These finalists will compete for prize money totaling $6,000 on April 16 during the 2019 INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics & Operations Research in Austin, Texas. The Analytics Society congratulates the finalists and thanks all of the award applicants for their outstanding submissions.
