The times they are a changin’ for advanced analytics

Since the mid-1990s I have used statistical modeling tools such as SAS as the primary tool for advanced analytics. I would place myself squarely in the camp of “statistical modelers” (vs. my machine learning friends – though I realize some might quibble with this distinction). Over the years I have led teams of statistical analysts who have primarily used such statistical packages as SAS/SPSS/S-Plus, etc. as their go-to analysis tool.

Award-winning analytics

When we think of analytics, we think of using data to make better decisions. But as any good analytics practitioner will tell you, that’s only part of the story. When analytics leads to fundamental changes in the way an organization approaches decision-making, the story moves from the back shelves to the bestseller list.

Big Data: Generation Next

We have all been hearing about both the “the analytics revolution” and “the rise of Big Data” forever, or so it seems. I credit the book “Competing on Analytics” by Thomas H. Davenport and Jeanne G. Harris [Harvard Business School Press, 2007] with making “analytics” part of the mainstream business lexicon. What is ‘wellness’?

Veterans returning from America’s operations in Iraq and Afghanistan face some issues different than their counterparts from previous conflicts. The institutions – public and private, local and national – that deal with these issues typically do so piecemeal, each focusing only on one aspect. According to a study just released by the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), this means that the support veterans receive is fragmented and less effective than it could and should be.

Bicycle route selection

I ride my road bike about 120 miles week in a good week. In the Monterey, Calif., area, I have a number of good options for cycling, but which routes are safest? Being on the bike gives one time to think. I’ve thought about this quite a bit and can put some analysis into it – about five minutes worth (just shy of two miles at 20 mph).
