Analytics ready for challenge

Seven years ago, the National Academy of Engineering named 14 “Engineering Grand Challenges” facing humanity, including complex yet critical goals such as engineering better medicines, making solar energy cost-competitive and securing cyberspace. Earlier this year, a team comprised of many prominent members of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS, publishers of Analytics magazine) submitted a report to the National Science Foundation outlining how operations research (O.R.) and high-end analytics could play the role of catalyst – utilizing its ideas and tools – to transcend disciplinary boundaries and help address many of the grand challenges.

Democratization and crowdsourcing

We are entering an era of democratization and crowdsourcing of analytics, driven by the acceleration of technological innovation and the open source movement, coupled with a global pool of highly qualified data scientists and big data technologists. All this is happening rapidly while the costs of computing and data storage continue to fall.

Déjà new’ all over again

“It’s crazy that you guys haven’t met each other already,” my friend Bryan wrote in the email that he had sent to us, “because you have an awful lot in common.” A couple of weeks later, with a day of meetings in Silicon Valley already on my calendar, I scheduled a “get to know you” session with Bryan’s friend Sanjay Mathur at his analytics consulting firm’s offices in Sunnyvale, Calif. Walking into a tree-filled open courtyard that was ringed by two floors of office suites, I was suddenly stopped short by a powerful sensation, a visceral recollection of a nearby place and a long-ago time.

State of healthcare analytics: A mid-year review

As we enter the summer months, noteworthy news in healthcare analytics has somewhat slumped. Two healthcare companies went public recently. One is Evolent Health, which raised $195 million in its initial public offering (IPO) on June 4. UPMC Health Plan and the Advisory Board Company founded Evolent Health in 2011. It offers cloud-based analytics solutions for population health management. The second company, Press Ganey, is known for its patient experience and satisfaction survey capabilities. In operation since 1985, it works with many big healthcare systems in the country. Since patient satisfaction is a key metric for the triple aim (cost, quality, satisfaction), many insights are generated by applying analytics on the survey data. The company raised $223 million in a May 20 IPO. Look for more to follow suit in the coming months.

How can KM and analytics help each other?

I have attended many conferences and workshops in knowledge management (KM) and analytics, respectively, in recent years, and it’s a rarity that the two disciplines co-exist in one conference. Usually, the conference focuses on either knowledge management or analytics, and you hardly find any sessions that bridge the two areas. I feel that it’s time for these two communities to co-locate and synergize, so that the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.

Let’s be reasonable about data privacy

The way some people talk about privacy, you would think we need to stop using credit cards or cell phones to have private lives – because everyone and their uncle is trying to find us in data. I certainly don’t want to live in a world where there is no privacy. But we also need to be reasonable, and reasonably well informed, about the risks.

Routing engine, award winner, NSF program

Did the cross-country drive that you planned using an online mapping service take twice as long as expected? In a new study published in the Articles in Advance section of Transportation Science, a journal of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), Microsoft researchers working on a project for Bing Maps explain how they developed the first routing engine that satisfies a large number of algorithmic requirements that overcome barriers to generating directions on multi-stage trips like coast-to-coast drives.

Reinventing industries – predictive game-changer

Despite all the advanced technology lining your pocket, car, home, workplace and even the proverbial cloud floating virtually above your head, the world is a remarkably inefficient, wasteful place. The organizations that make the world go ‘round, the companies, agencies and hospitals that treat and serve us in every which way, constantly get it wrong. Marketing casts a wide net; junk mail is marketing money wasted and trees felled to print unread brochures. Institutions are blindsided by risky debtors and policyholders. Fraud goes undetected. And, critically, healthcare could use all the prognostication it can get. These are heavy costs that tax both you and I in various ways every day. If only there were some way to run things better, to improve the effectiveness of the frontline operations that define a functional society.

Markov’s Abbey

Like many people in the English-speaking world, I have spent some hours over the past five years watching a drama called “Downton Abbey.” This period show centers around an aristocratic family – the Crawleys – and their trials and tribulations. Those who watch it with an analytic eye (perhaps under duress) are quick to see that the show seems to have recurring plot elements to wit: the estate seems to run short of money occasionally, Mr. Molesley has a hard time keeping up with his duties, and Lord Grantham’s favored valet, Mr. Bates, seems to be eternally afoul of the law, although he has done nothing wrong, and so on. While there are no shortage of disasters to befall Downton and its occupants, I started to wonder if there were some sorts of patterns or analysis that could be performed.

Picking the right campsite

Selecting the ideal camping site requires careful consideration of many factors such as the proximity to water, availability of firewood and protection from the elements. Your potential camping sites are shown in the corresponding map (Figure 1). The map consists of 64 sites each with varying characteristics, including water, wood, swamp and mosquitoes.
