Note from the Editor
I am delighted to write my first Note from the Editor and to introduce both myself and the new editorial board of INFORMS Journal on Computing (IJOC). At the same time, I would like to express my deep gratitude to the former editor-in-chief, Alice Smith, and to all previous area and associate editors.
Alice, you have been a tremendous inspiration to everyone who has worked with you over the past seven years. Your vision for the journal and your thoughtful, steady leadership have shaped IJOC in profound ways. The quality and reputation that the journal has achieved during your tenure set a very high bar. The new editorial team, whom I have the privilege to coordinate, is fully committed to preserving and further strengthening IJOC’s rigor and impact.
Like other INFORMS journals, we face important challenges. These include serving our community more effectively with respect to data and code availability and thoughtfully navigating the opportunities and implications of new artificial intelligence technologies. I am confident that, by working together, we will continue to advance and strengthen the journal.
We have introduced several structural changes to the editorial areas. These include new area titles, such as “Artificial Intelligence & Optimization,” as well as the creation of two new areas—“Computational Modeling & Applications” and “Simulation, Stochastic Models, & Stochastic Optimization”—each formed through the consolidation of previously existing areas. Although biological systems, medicine, and healthcare no longer constitute a separate area, IJOC remains strongly committed to publishing high-quality research in these domains.
I would like to thank Russell Bent and Giacomo Nannicini for continuing to lead their areas. I am also deeply grateful to the new area editors—Shane Henderson, Willem-Jan van Hoeve, Simge Küçükyavuz, Jim Luedtke, Ruth Misener, Veronica Piccialli, and Domenico Salvagnin—for enthusiastically accepting their new roles.
Finally, I would like to highlight that, in this issue, we recognize, in the category of Meritorious Papers, the article “A New Upper Bound for the Euclidean TSP Constant,” by John Gunnar Carlsson and Julien Yu. As one reviewer wrote, “It is a fundamental question regarding a fundamental problem, and there has been virtually no progress since the 1950s.” Congratulations to the authors on this important contribution.
