Software Productivity as a Strategic Variable

Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1287/inte.15.3.116

In recent years the major incentive for adopting computer technology—increased productivity through automation of labor intensive tasks—is eroding as the field of data processing itself becomes labor intensive. Systems must be made more productive to cope with the magnitude and complexity of the tasks performed and the scarcity of trained software personnel. Hindering progress are systems maintenance problems and operational and aggregate bottlenecks.
