Comment on the Paper by Borsting et al., “A Model for a First MBA Course in Management Science/Operations Research”
Abstract
The suggested change in philosophy for a first MBA course in MS/OR from a model-based structure to a “problem first” focus is very welcome. Further development work is required before the “problem first” philosophy can be achieved, because despite the suggested change in philosophy, the course structures suggested by Borsting et al. are still model-oriented, as are virtually all the major MS/OR texts. Further work is also required in developing the goals and objectives of MS/OR courses, the breadth vs. depth issue, the use of computers, and the choices of specific topics. The first MBA course in MS/OR is the medium through which the biggest impact on the development of the field can be achieved, and further research aimed at producing insights for instructors is warranted.
