Innovation is a necessary major component of the rapid changes currently going on in American industrial companies, particularly in some large ones that have gotten into serious difficulties. I place the various types of innovation in a taxonomy in which each class has distinctive characteristics and specific organizational and managerial requirements. I also use historical examples to illustrate the various types of innovation and discuss employee difficulties in adapting to change.
