Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1287/opre.19.7.1751

In the simulation of discrete systems, such as those using the popular GPSS simulator, the following problem is often encountered: What probability distribution should we employ for the value of a system parameter in the absence of any knowledge except its range? Based on the concept of entropy, this note provides justification for the use of several well-known distributions in various cases.
