A Model for Evaluating Golf Handicapping

Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1287/opre.22.5.1040

This paper develops an analytical (nonsimulation) model of the game of golf in order to investigate the “fairness” of the present handicapping scheme, as well as to compare the results of medal play with those of match play. Although many simplifying assumptions are made in order to exercise the model, the results offer general insights into the relations between handicaps and win probabilities for selected pairs of players.
