Craft in Operations Research
Abstract
As in any science, day-to-day work in operations research involves diverse craft skills. This informal essay discusses some early examples, based on the work of W. J. Youden, one of the unsung heroes of OR work during World War II. It is based on a banquet talk given September 5, 1991 at the Eighth International Symposium on Military Operational Research held at the Royal Military College of Science, Shrivenham, United Kingdom.
