Productivity and Technological Change

Despite all that has been written and said about productivity, there is a lack of understanding of the factors determining productivity. I advocate using formal models that show how productivity is determined by managers making rational decisions on the basis of their perceptions about markets, finance, and the technological alternatives. The approach is illustrated by considering the effect of technological change on different firms within an industry.
