A study of production in a cable plant divides the production-operations situation into four states and derives from them production-scheduling techniques and inventory-minimization techniques. The sole customer controls demand, contract quantity, and the order details and thus the plant situation. Because the method has been demonstrated to reduce layoffs, setups, and costs, management has adopted the method to manage production and operations.
