The New Dynamism: Part 3

Businesses (and institutions) increasingly depend upon information systems for competitive advantage. Many investments in computerized systems have not paid off or had overruns in time and money. Reasons include lack of clearly defined business objectives and their measurements. To help this, a taxonomy business of information systems is defined—transaction systems, increasingly computerized, and decision support systems (DSSs), of multiple media and transmission modes, not well computerized, and often directed too high in organizations for operational effectiveness. Finally, installation of new information systems must go slowly to obtain employee understanding and acceptance.
