Applied Optimization—A Survey

Although everyone talks about applying optimization, it is conventional wisdom that professional journals never present any examples of applied optimization. It is the purpose of this paper to assess the extent to which optimization applications are being published. To keep this task within bounds, yet provide a meaningful survey, this paper considers: (1) Only work published in the recent MS/OR literature; (2) Work done abroad as well as in the United States; and (3) A variety, but not all optimization techniques.
