The Value of the Simple Approach
Abstract
In many OR problems there is a feeling at the end of the study that by the adoption of a simpler approach the task could have been completed with less effort than was actually applied.
A survey was made of about 100 defence OR tasks carried out by Australian workers. The studiers' views on whether a simpler approach would have been preferable and the associated reasons were sought. These views are analysed and discussed.
The survey supports the view that a simple approach is worthwhile in many military OR tasks. However, one class of problem was identified where a more comprehensive approach was preferred.
Some hints on how to achieve a simple approach are given.
