A Stochastic Model of Supermarket Traffic Flow

Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1287/opre.14.4.555

A model is developed to predict area-to-area transition probabilities for traffic in supermarkets. The independent variables involve physical measures of store layout and transaction volumes at various locations. The model is fitted to data on traffic patterns in five Pittsburgh stores. The results indicate that the model is useful for traffic analysis both in a given store and for analysis of hypothetical store layouts.
