A General Dynamic Model for Air Defense

Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1287/opre.15.5.779

A general model of air defense/offense interaction is developed on the basis of a dynamic program. Each particular air defense mission against aircraft, tactical ballistic missiles, or ICBM's is treated as a special case of the general functional equation. Several types of measures of effectiveness are generated, either as expectations or as probability distributions, and examples of each type are given. Particular applications of the model to problems of tradeoff, optimal strategies against defense control centers, and cost-effectiveness are discussed.
