The Third National Meeting of the Society, Hotel Statler, Boston, Mass., Nov. 23–24, 1953

In sumptuous surroundings, far from the Department of Defense, the Third National Meeting turned more toward operations research in business and industry than previous Society meetings. One half-day session of four invited papers was devoted to inventory control and production scheduling, six of the eighteen contributed papers concerned direct application to business and industry, and one of the three invited papers presented in the session on search theory, an erudite and generally highly mathematical subject, was on the earthy topic of consumer shopping!
