A Polar-Planimeter Method for Determining the Probability of Hitting a Target

Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1287/opre.4.1.87

This paper presents a method of determining by means of a polar planimeter the probability of falling inside a plane area when the distribution of “hits” in the plane of this area is a normal bivariate distribution centered at some fixed point in the plane. The method presented is especially useful when the area involved is irregular.
