The effectiveness of military weapons is often determined by rigorous study of the appropriate weapons-system components and their interaction. The criterion of effectiveness is usually defined in terms of tactical needs in combat situations. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to check on the validity of such effectiveness estimates, since there are some very practical limitations imposed upon the setting-up and conduct of real life tests of military weapons.
