The Dispersion of the Stopping Probability Function

Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1287/trsc.23.3.219

This paper points out the relationship, in traffic signals, between the length of the warning period, and the dispersion of the stopping probability function. It is demonstrated with empirical evidence that a long warning period for the termination of the green light causes an increase in the dispersion of the stopping probability function and in the indecision zone. It is argued that the probability for rear-end collisions might also increase.
