Some Layout Problems on the Line with Interdistance Constraints and Costs

Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1287/opre.27.5.952

We study several facility layout problems on the line with minimum-separation constraints and costs proportional to distances between facilities. We obtain virtually closed-form solutions to the problems by applying simple ordering procedures. The solutions all have the property that the facilities most used, or of smallest sizes, are in the middle.
