JOURNAL SPOTLIGHT
“This is a time of great change for OR, MS, and Analytics. With demand for analytical skills booming, new master’s programs in analytics springing up seemingly every day, and interest in analytics at an all-time high, this is truly a time of great opportunity for INFORMS. We see the Analytics Society, the Analytics Conference, the Certified Analytics Professional Certification, and the Innovative Applications in Analytics Award. However, despite widespread interest and momentum, we have no journal that aligns itself with Analytics. I propose we change that.
“Interfaces is a great journal I care much about. I’ve been on the editorial board for 10 years, taking over as Editor-in-Chief in 2017, and publishing in it many, many times. But Interfaces is known only to our organization. Though part of its mission is outreach to those who might use analytical methods, the name Interfaces does not resonate with practitioners and those not familiar with OR. Interfaces publishes great analytical work but is relatively unknown outside of a relatively small academic circle.
“Including ‘Analytics’ in an INFORMS journal name will bolster our brand by aligning with a key INFORMS direction, gain that journal greater exposure and interest, and encourage new members and contributors. Importantly, it will promote INFORMS and the great work we do more effectively.
“So, I am proposing that we change the name of Interfaces to the INFORMS Journal on Applied Analytics. The name juxtaposes INFORMS and analytics, emphasizes the application of methods, and reminds readers and potential authors that this is an academically rigorous journal. I hope you will support this change.
“I provide more detailed thoughts in my most recent Editor’s Statement. I encourage you to take the survey. And hope you join the discussion on this subject. Your input is valued!”
