“Operations management academics have long been concerned with the management of gatekeepers in referral systems. Our paper shows that referral behaviour has a significant state-dependence, suggesting that simplistic models that neglect this aspect are likely to offer misleading advice. For clinicians and hospital managers, our paper's findings suggest that there may be overprovision of services at both high and low workload levels, albeit for different types of services and patients.”

“It is an aphorism that the ubiquity of digital technologies has profoundly transformed the nature of knowledge production in the 21st century. From blogs to wikis to discussions in online communities to self-publishing, examples of voluntarily provided user generated content (UGC) abound. A persistent puzzle in the context of UGC is how to optimally design incentives that promote high quality and timely contribution. The authors address this puzzle in an elegant study that compellingly juxtaposes two important theoretical perspectives: goal-setting and status hierarchy. The empirical analysis is rigorous and findings shed new light on the challenge of user contributions.”

“Firms attempt to maximize their profits yet their hierarchical structure and short-term aspirations strongly influence their product termination decisions. Performance above or below their target is interpreted by managers as success or failure and affect firms’ project investment decisions in an asymmetric manner, which is further moderated by centralization.”
