Author's Own Work

The author is required to transfer copyright (access Copyright Transfer Agreement Forms) of his or her paper to INFORMS but reserves the right to use all or part of the paper in future works he or she may write or edit (e.g., textbooks, reviews, and lectures) and to obtain a copyright assignment from INFORMS without fee for such purposes.

As a condition of final acceptance of a paper for publication in an INFORMS journal, the author must indicate whether the paper is posted on a website other than the author's personal website. The author is responsible for ensuring that if any part of the paper has been copyrighted for prepublication, for example, as a working paper, the copyright can and will be transferred to INFORMS when the paper has been accepted. This includes both print and electronic forms of the paper.

Authors may post their author accepted manuscript (AAM) on personal websites, scholarly collaboration networks, or noncommercial institutional repositories immediately after acceptance. Posted AAMs must include the DOI (permalink) provided by INFORMS to the final published version of record. Authors may not post their final published version of record except where authorized under an INFORMS Open Option open access publication license.

Conference Proceedings

It is the responsibility of each editor in chief to judge the merits of any paper previously published in a conference proceedings, provided that the author can provide clear copyright transfer. The merits consist of reviewing the paper to determine whether it makes a sufficiently new and additional contribution to the archival literature. If so, the editor will review the paper in the appropriate manner.

The author is required to transfer copyright of the paper to INFORMS before it can be published in an INFORMS journal in print and electronic formats. The copyright owner, who is generally the author, reserves the right to use all or part of the paper in future works the author may write or edit and to obtain permission from INFORMS without fee for such purposes. The copyright owner certifies that the paper has not been published elsewhere and that no part of the material is subject to another copyright except those parts covered by permissions the owner has obtained. Copies of these permissions must be provided to INFORMS. In the case of a paper with coauthors, the signature of only one author is required and assumes that the coauthors have delegated copyright transfer authority to the signatory. The assignment of copyright form contains the complete INFORMS policy on copyright transfer.

Open Access

INFORMS recognizes open access (OA) as the unrestricted public access to data and manuscripts peer-reviewed and accepted on behalf of any of the association’s publications. It understands that an author may be required or wish to publish his or her manuscripts as open access and with alternative copyright restrictions. As part of its efforts to support open access, INFORMS commits to continuing to provide “green” and “gold” open access options to its authors through the following efforts:

Gold Option: INFORMS Open Option (IOO) provides an open access alternative for articles accepted in any INFORMS journals that would have otherwise been available only through subscriptions or pay per view. Click here for details.

Green Option: Authors may post their author accepted manuscript (AAM) on personal websites, scholarly collaboration networks, or noncommercial institutional repositories immediately after acceptance. Posted AAMs must include the DOI (permalink) provided by INFORMS to the final published version of record. Authors may not post their final published version of record except where authorized under an INFORMS Open Option open access publication license.

Third-Party Permissions

Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reprint content that is copyrighted or trademarked by a third party, for example, a figure or table that is not your original work. Photographs and corporate logos, including those taken from the Web, are likely to be protected by copyright. Please clear these permissions before your accepted paper is sent to INFORMS for production. Send statements of permission to INFORMS with your assignment of copyright form. Website Posting of Page Proofs Prior to Publication

INFORMS sends page proof files to authors for proofreading with the understanding that the files are not to be circulated otherwise or posted on websites. The intent is to avoid having multiple versions of the content in circulation prior to publication and avoid incorrect citations.

Working Paper Policy

As a condition of final acceptance of a paper for publication in an INFORMS journal, the author must indicate whether the paper is posted on a working paper website, other than the author’s own site. The author is responsible for assuring that if any part of the paper has been copyrighted for prepublication as a working paper, the copyright can and will be transferred to INFORMS when the paper is accepted. This includes both print and electronic forms of the paper.

Reuse Permissions

Books (Including Textbooks)

A minimum fee of $25.00 per page will be charged for each article, and the number of articles can never exceed 25% of the total content of the book. If more than the 25% limitation is to be used, this must be negotiated further. The usual fee for use of each figure or table (with no text pages included) is $95.00.

As a courtesy to authors, we also require that their permission be obtained. INFORMS does not maintain a database of current addresses, but the information may be found through an author’s affiliation website (or the department contact, if the author is no longer listed in a directory of that institution).

Course Packs

Permission is required but is granted at no charge for nonprofit classroom distribution. Massive open online course (MOOC) and commercial course pack requests must be sent to the Rights and Permissions department for a price quote.

Dissertations

Permission is required but is granted at no charge, and includes dissertations published online, e.g., UMI Dissertation Publishing. See Institutional Repositories below for restrictions on reuse.

Supplemental Material

The material placed on a journal’s website and not printed in the journal is considered to be part of the paper accepted for publication. INFORMS holds copyright to the supplemental material of the papers it publishes. If content from a supplement is to be republished elsewhere, INFORMS would grant permission and provide a credit line to be published with the content.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Libraries may print an article and circulate it on ILL. Interlibrary loan of electronic articles is prohibited.

Institutional Repositories

INFORMS gives permission to authors to post their author accepted manuscript (AAM) on institutional repositories. After January 1, 2015, it no longer grants permission for the INFORMS typeset version to be posted on institutional repositories. Authors may post their AAM in noncommercial institutional repositories immediately after acceptance. Posted AAMs must include the DOI (permalink) provided by INFORMS to the final published version of record. Authors may not post their final published version of record except where authorized under an INFORMS Open Option open access publication license.

Journals

Permission to reprint content from an INFORMS publication in another journal is required. Authors may reprint their own content from an INFORMS publication in another journal at no charge.

Photocopy for Educational or Personal Use

Permission is required but is granted at no charge, and a credit line is provided.

Translations

INFORMS grants permission for republication and translation of content and notifies the third party that INFORMS is not responsible for errors introduced in the translation of the original article. The INFORMS credit line includes this statement. The original author’s permission must be obtained to translate the work. INFORMS does not maintain a database of current addresses, but the information may be found through an author’s affiliation website (or the department contact, if the author is no longer listed in a directory of that institution).

Website Posting by Third Parties

INFORMS encourages the use of the permalinks (DOIs) provided on the abstract pages of its articles on INFORMS PubsOnline. In some cases, such as the media, INFORMS will provide a token URL to grant access to a particular article through a third-party website. Request for a token URL or permission to post an article should be initiated through the permissions link on the article’s abstract page.
