Rights, Reuse & Permissions

INFORMS supports the responsible dissemination and reuse of scholarly content while protecting the integrity of the published scholarly record and the rights of authors, readers, and copyright holders.

This page outlines general policies regarding republication, reuse permissions, licensing, educational use, translations, and related rights matters for content published by INFORMS.

Information regarding author posting, repository deposit, manuscript sharing, and preprints is available separately in Author Posting & Sharing.

Questions regarding attribution requirements, reuse of previously published material, plagiarism, fair use, and author permissions responsibilities are addressed in Originality, Attribution & Copyright.

Permission Requests

INFORMS partners with Copyright Clearance Center’s Marketplace service to manage many reuse and republication permission requests.

To request permission to reuse INFORMS content:

  1. Visit the article abstract page on INFORMS PubsOnline.
  2. Select the Permissions link located within the article Tools.
  3. Follow the instructions for the intended reuse.

Requests not supported through Marketplace may be directed to [email protected].

Reuse in Books, Journals & Other Publications

Permission is generally required to reproduce INFORMS-published material in:

  • books,
  • textbooks,
  • journals,
  • edited volumes,
  • commercial publications, and
  • other formally distributed works.

This includes:

  • figures,
  • tables,
  • substantial text excerpts, and
  • supplemental material.

Authors seeking to republish their own INFORMS-published material in books, journals, edited volumes, or other formally distributed works may be eligible for reuse rights or fee waivers depending on the nature of the reuse and applicable copyright terms.

Appropriate acknowledgment and credit lines are required for all approved reuse.

Educational & Classroom Use

INFORMS supports educational use of published content.

Permission for nonprofit classroom use, including course packs and instructional distribution, is generally granted without fee, provided that:

  • proper attribution is included,
  • the material is distributed for educational purposes only, and
  • the integrity of the original work is preserved.

Commercial educational uses, including certain online instructional platforms or commercial course packs, may require additional review or licensing.

Dissertations & Theses

Reuse of INFORMS-published content in dissertations and theses is generally permitted without fee when proper attribution is provided.

This includes dissertations distributed electronically through institutional repositories or dissertation publishing services.

Authors should ensure that repository posting of published or accepted manuscript versions complies with the Author Posting & Sharing policy.

Translations

Permission is required to translate INFORMS-published material into another language.

Translation requests should identify:

  • the material to be translated,
  • the intended audience and distribution, and
  • whether the translation will be commercial or noncommercial.

The original source must be acknowledged in all approved translations.

Supplemental Material

Supplemental files associated with published articles are considered part of the scholarly publication record.

Reuse or republication of supplemental content may require permission and appropriate attribution, depending on the nature of the reuse and the ownership status of the material.

Media, Third-Party Websites & Linking

INFORMS encourages the use of article permalinks and DOIs when referencing published content online.

In certain circumstances, INFORMS may provide limited-access or promotional sharing links for media coverage or authorized third-party distribution.

Requests regarding media use, website reposting, or special distribution arrangements should be directed to [email protected].
