From OR to OM: Observations on the Emergence of a Discipline

    Abstract

This tutorial is based on the author's experience in applying operational research or operations research (OR) in industry 50 years ago during the early 1960s. It describes some of the problems and issues, almost all of which were new at the time, long before any texts on the use of OR to understand production and inventory control. However, once academics, consultants, and software developers became aware of the issues, the body of knowledge acquired through OR became the basis for a new discipline, operations management (OM).
