Managers, Computer Systems, and Productivity—Franz Edelman, in Memoriam
Abstract
Information systems can now affect every aspect of organizations. But basically it is still the contribution of people—user managers, system builders, and various intermediaries—that focuses this impact in positive directions. It is our objective for the functional area on information systems in organizations to present concise descriptions of the role information systems technologies can play when wisely designed, developed, and implemented by people.
We have chosen to inaugurate this functional area of Interfaces by reprinting a paper that has been recognized by the Society for Management Information Systems as a leading example of the role of information systems in organizations. Not coincidentally this paper was written by Franz Edelman whose contributions to the field and to the TIMS and ORSA organizations were cut short by his sudden death on January 15, 1982. This paper is published not only to illustrate the type of material that is sought for this functional area but also to signify the result of Franz's personal energy, insight, and sharing of ideas. The example of Franz's imaginative contribution to RCA's human resource management and to the design of useful human support systems should be remembered. This work was sponsored and funded by RCA Corporation while the author was Staff Vice President, Business Systems and Analysis.
In order to further memorialize Franz Edelman, responses from several members have encouraged TIMS to establish a Franz Edelman fund. This fund will be used for scholarships and prizes in information systems and management science. Contributions may be sent to TIMS—Franz Edelman Fund, 146 Westminster Street, Providence, Rhode Island 02903.
