Graduate Programs in Operational Research at Lancaster and Sussex

The Graduate programmes at Lancaster and Sussex have much in common. Although the areas of special interest are somewhat different the general philosophy matches closely, and it thus seems more compact to present our views on the main purposes of education in the Management Sciences jointly.

As the form of graduate education differs significantly from one country to another, it might perhaps be useful to the readers of TIMS to point out that in the United Kingdom two main forms of full-time post graduate education are common: (a) Programmes mainly of a “course” content, which may also have some practical project work, but which do not expect proof of research ability from a student (mainly offering Masters degrees). (b) Both Master's and Doctoral programmes with little or no course work and in which the merits of the student are almost exclusively judged on his ability in research.
