An Application of Queueing Theory to Reservation Newtorks

Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1287/mnsc.22.5.540

This paper discusses the modeling and solution of a reservation network problem. The model is presented in terms of motel reservations, but is applicable to reservation systems for airlines, automobile rental agencies, etc. The network studied employs three methods for delivery of reservation messages, two of which serve jointly as a control mechanism. The problem solved is that of finding minimum rates for the control mechanism which ensure that, with a given probability, messages are delivered within a specified period of time.
