Dynamic Programming and the Reliability of Multicomponent Devices

Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1287/opre.6.2.200

In this paper it is shown how the functional equation technique of dynamic programming may be used to treat a class of problems that arise in the construction of multicomponent devices. We are interested in determining the types of components and the quantities that should be used in order to construct the most reliable device possible subject to given cost and weight constraints. A numerical example is given
