A Mathematical Model of Terrain Shielding

Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1287/opre.6.4.530

An estimate of the effect of terrain irregularities in shielding a target from the burst of a fragmentation weapon is valuable in determining the weapon's effectiveness. In this study a ground-cover function is developed that estimates terrain shielding as a function of burst height, target size, and distance of the target from the burst. This function is then used to examine three representative types of terrain.
