Effective Alternatives to Large-Scale Information Systems

Managers in manufacturing environments need timely information in a form useful in making operational decisions. Existing information systems commonly exhibit two important shortcomings: too complicated to be understood quickly, and too slow to be effective. Alternative information systems have been devised which have been successful tools for decision making. This paper describes three projects which implemented successful alternatives to large-scale information systems, and the general principles which they demonstrate are explained.
