Federal Agency Use of Computer Modeling and Decision Analytic Support
Abstract
The major federal government agencies make widespread use of computer modeling and computer-based decision analytic techniques. However, the full extent and actual effects of such use, especially with respect to federal decision making, are poorly understood. Also, guidelines for the evaluation of models are deficient, and the mechanisms for locating and gaining access to key modeling and decision support information are incomplete and inadequate. Several actions can be taken to improve quality control of such activities, to encourage exchange of learning and expertise, to facilitate public access, and to strengthen the understanding and involvement of top agency officials with respect to computer modeling and decision analytic support—in short, to help decision makers more fully realize the potential of information technology to improve federal decision making.
