Information Systems in Management Science—Graduate Professional Programs in Information Systems: A Survey

Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1287/inte.6.1.38

In his recent article regarding curriculum in information systems (IS), Vazsonyi [Vazsonyi, A. 1974. The information systems option in master of business administration degree programs. Interfaces4 (4, August) 12–17.] references the “lack of consensus on what to do and wide disparity in status among schools”. Unfortunately, neither Vazsonyi or anyone else has much idea of what the “consensus” is or, for that matter, what the status is in this new academic area. Since the authors' institutions are engaged in graduate educational programs in information systems and we are frequently questioned about what others are doing, we set out to obtain a better understanding of what IS programs various schools have and the level of resources being devoted to graduate programs in information systems. Our findings should provide some interesting background on many of the assertions Vazsonyi makes concerning educational programs and the assumptions upon which they are based.
