“Many people think of outlet stores as harmful to the image of high-end brands. While that might be partly true ... having outlet stores allows firms to introduce new products more frequently in their main channels. Therefore, the dual channel strategy actually allows brands to boost both quality and prices where their core customers are concerned.”

Interfaces
“Traditionally, US Naval training groups for nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers had been established by expert opinion and iteration. It was a cumbersome process and rife with subjectivity and assignment errors. A new approach using mathematical modeling improved throughput of students by 8%, reduced backlogs, effected better training facility utilization, and made what-if analysis possible to evaluate the effectiveness of various training policies.”

Manufacturing & Service Operations Management
“Due to rising labor cost in China and other developing countries, the economic value of ‘offshoring’ is declining. Consequently, many firms are considering to ‘reshore’ their manufacturing operations by bringing factories back to the United States. Li Chen and Bin Hu develop an analytical model to compare offshoring and reshoring operations. Their model captures offshoring and reshoring’s direct cost differences, and incorporates a demand information update in the timeline so as to capture how well an offshoring versus a reshoring manufacturer responds to new demand information. When the supply of components is offshored, they find that reshoring does not always have a responsiveness advantage, and offshoring may be preferable even without having a direct cost advantage. Therefore, when the supply is offshored, it may not be economical to bring the factories back to the United States.”

INFORMS Editor's Cut: Ending Human Trafficking with Analytics

Volume Editors: Kendra Taylor and Renata Konrad
Series Editor: Anne G. Robinson

“An estimated 30–40 million people worldwide fall victim to human trafficking and sexual exploitation; it is a form of modern day slavery. Global supply chains are utilized to force victims to engage in hard labor, sexual acts, and demeaning behavior against their will for the profit of another. This Editor’s Cut volume highlights the potential impact and impressive results of the INFORMS community—and the O.R. tools used—to break illicit human trafficking supply chains that rely on forced labor, thus disrupting or delaying the flow of cash, services, material, or information.

As the injustices of human trafficking and the suffering of strangers hit closer and closer to home, this timely research is needed more than ever. Through research and industry articles, podcasts, and videos compiled by the volume editors, the featured authors demonstrate remarkable results and the potential impact of the INFORMS community in breaking supply chains that rely on forced labor for generations to come.

Whether you are looking for innovative uses of these O.R. tools to tackle the global problem of trafficking and forced labor, inspiration for your next major research contribution, or classroom examples to inspire the next generation, this Editor’s Cut volume displays INFORMS researchers connecting the head and the heart of the matter.

INFORMS Editor’s Cut is the preeminent collection of industry-focused innovations and applications in advanced analytics and operations research. Curated by INFORMS thought leaders, these collections explore relevant analytical insights, issues, and trends through a multimedia experience.”
