Conference Forward to Journal Policy
Marketing Science has ongoing relationships with the annual ACM Conference on Economics and Computation (EC). The following details the review process for papers forwarded from the EC conference to Marketing Science for consideration as possible publications in the journal.
At the outset, it is important to note that there is NO guarantee that a paper forwarded from the conference will be accepted for publication at Marketing Science. The goal of the “EC-to-Marketing Science” path is to provide a faster overall timeline for the authors (from first submission to publication, if accepted), and to provide authors with a higher quality review process.
Authors following this route must elect to publish an extended abstract (one page or less) placeholder in the conference proceedings. Any deviation from this will result in automatic rejection from Marketing Science.
- The paper must be submitted to Marketing Science within six months of the EC decision.
- Authors should indicate that they are choosing the EC-to-Marketing Science path in their cover letter to the Editor-in-Chief (EIC). The cover letter should provide the reasons for why the submitted manuscript merits publication in Marketing Science. The cover letter should also highlight in brief how the manuscript has addressed the feedback from the EC reviews. Finally, the cover letter should indicate the track in which the EC manuscript was processed (e.g., theory, AI, empirics).
- The EIC will then assign a Senior Editor (SE) for the paper, who then handles the process going forward.
- The SE requests the EC conference chairs to forward all the reviews, the names of reviewers, and any higher-level editors involved in handling the paper.
- The SE will first determine whether to proceed with the review process. This decision could be made by SE alone or with input from an Associate Editor (AE). If the SE wishes to consult an AE, s/he will invite an AE who was NOT involved in handling the conference paper and share the EC reviews with the AE.
- If the SE decides to proceed with the review process, s/he will attempt to invite one reviewer who was involved in handling the conference paper at EC and one reviewer who was NOT involved.
- There is no guarantee that a reviewer from the EC process will be included in the review process. The decision of whether to include a reviewer from the EC process depends on whether the EC reviews are of sufficient quality, whether the EC reviewers have high expertise on the topic, and whether they are willing to review for Marketing Science.
- Out of the two chosen reviewers, there will always be one reviewer who was NOT involved in reviewing the paper submitted to EC.
- The reviews from EC are not shared with any of the Marketing Science reviewers. Note that if an invited reviewer at Marketing Science was part of the EC review process, s/he will have already had access to the EC reviews from that process.
- The AE then makes a recommendation to the SE using all available information (conference reviews and Marketing Science reviews). The SE makes the final decision based on all available information. The final decision for such papers is subject to the same conditions e.g., on the Appeals Process, as papers directly submitted to Marketing Science.
